English Teaching Ministry
Building Bridges with English is a facilitated five-week, online, collaborative course. It prepares participants for English-teaching ministry. The course provides training in strategies and methods, introduces teaching resources, and includes a ministry element. Although it is designed for individuals who have little or no previous training in teaching English to non-native speakers, it could also be a refresher for those who have experience in teaching. It was created with the following persons in mind: Missionaries who use English teaching in their ministries, teachers in church-based ESL programs, and volunteer English tutors.
Building Bridges with English begins with a one-week introduction to course mechanics, followed by four weeks covering the topics of: Understanding Language Learners, Laying a Groundwork for Teaching, Learning ESL/EFL Teaching Methods, and Practicing What We’ve Learned. Subtopics include: The Five Stages of Language Learning, Communicating Effectively with English Learners, The Four Basic Language Skills, Sharing the Gospel across Cultures, ESL/EFL Teaching Methods, Planning an Effective English Lesson, Writing and Evaluating Lessons Plans, and Praying for Your Students and Anticipating Results.
The course requires four to six hours of work per week, depending on your reading speed, level of involvement, etc. All course materials are provided online within the course. The course is asynchronous, meaning that there is not a set time that you need to be online. You can participate at the time that works best for you, as long as you keep up with due dates and forum conversations.
